How long does clear aligner treatment take?

In short

Clear aligner treatment varies from person to person. Cleveland Clinic says a few slightly crooked teeth may need aligners for up to nine months, while the American Association of Orthodontists notes that complex bite problems can take a couple of years. The number of aligners, the change interval, consistent wear and any refinements set the timeline; retainers follow.

How long does clear aligner treatment usually take?

The length of clear aligner treatment varies from person to person and depends mainly on the problem being corrected and how far the teeth need to move. Mild crowding or spacing in a few teeth can usually be treated within about a year; comprehensive treatment that also corrects the bite takes longer. The sources give similar ranges:

Source Time frame given
Cleveland Clinic Up to nine months for a few slightly crooked teeth; several more months for more serious problems
American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) For orthodontic treatment in general, mild crowding or spacing often resolves in eight to twelve months; more complex bite problems may take a couple of years
British Orthodontic Society (BOS) For orthodontic treatment in general, simple straightening can sometimes be done in six months; getting the teeth to bite together better often takes one to two years

According to the AAO, your orthodontist estimates the treatment length after the examination, and treatment can take longer for adults than for children or teenagers because adult teeth are more firmly set in the jaw. Our guide to orthodontics for adults covers what else matters when treatment is planned for an adult.

How do the number of aligners and the change interval set the timeline?

In aligner treatment, the planned tooth movement is split into small steps, and a separate aligner is made for each step. According to the AAO, each aligner is worn for a week or two on average before you switch to the next one, and the total number of aligners depends on your needs. Cleveland Clinic says aligners are generally replaced with a new one every two weeks. Put simply, the length of active treatment is roughly the number of aligners multiplied by the change interval.

A randomised clinical trial by Al-Nadawi and colleagues (The Angle Orthodontist, 2021) illustrates this. In 75 patients without extractions whose first series contained 17 to 25 aligners, that series took about five months on average with 7-day changes and about nine months with 14-day changes, so doubling the interval nearly doubled the time. The 14-day schedule was statistically more accurate for some back-tooth movements, but no difference crossed the authors’ threshold for clinical significance; they found the 7-day schedule acceptable and suggested the 14-day schedule for challenging movements.

These results cover only the first series in relatively simple cases treated by one orthodontist. Your dentist sets the interval according to the movements your teeth need; do not switch to the next aligner early on your own.

Are clear aligners quicker than braces?

Not necessarily, says the AAO: aligners are manufactured and shipped, which alone can take several weeks, and with the initial scans, fitting attachments and getting used to wearing them, aligner treatment can take as long as braces. In the AAO’s view, neither option is inherently faster; the individual case and how consistently the appliance is worn matter more.

Research is mixed. An overview of 18 systematic reviews by Yassir and colleagues (2022) found conflicting results on treatment duration and noted that aligners may be associated with shorter treatment in mild to moderate cases. A 2019 review by Ke and colleagues described one study in which braces were more efficient than aligners in patients who needed extractions.

What can make treatment take longer?

The first estimate can change during treatment for these reasons:

  1. How severe the problem is: in a single-centre study of 404 patients (Gkinosati and colleagues, 2026), treatment duration was linked to upper crowding, how the molars and canines meet, the overlap of the front teeth, midline discrepancies and missing or extracted back teeth. BOS notes that severe crowding, extractions, complex tooth movements and problems caused by the size or position of the jaws may need additional techniques such as fixed braces.
  2. Refinements: if check-ups show that the teeth have not reached their planned positions, an additional series of aligners may be made. In a 2025 survey of 188 orthodontists by Ladewig and colleagues, the orthodontists reported requesting at least one refinement in about 70% of cases and a second in about 22%. New aligners have to be made, which adds time.
  3. Not wearing aligners enough: the AAO recommends wearing aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, or as prescribed, and warns that inconsistent wear can extend treatment or compromise the result.
  4. Lost or broken aligners: according to the AAO, a lost aligner can set treatment back, and you should contact your orthodontist promptly if one is lost or damaged.
  5. Missed check-ups: the AAO says that wearing aligners as prescribed and keeping your appointments keeps treatment on schedule.
  6. Changing practice mid-treatment: BOS says research has shown that treatment takes an average of six months longer when a patient transfers to another orthodontist.

Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth so the aligner can grip them, and BOS notes that some crowding can be corrected by slightly reducing the width of teeth (interproximal reduction). Both are part of the plan, and whether they are needed is decided during planning. Our guide to clear aligner attachments explains what to do if an attachment comes off.

How often are check-ups needed, and what if you live abroad?

You change aligners at home, but the AAO stresses that moving teeth is a complex biological process that needs supervision by an orthodontist from start to finish. It says visits to pick up new aligners or adjust braces are typically scheduled every six to ten weeks, and that the number of visits depends on the case. Cleveland Clinic explains that follow-up appointments check that the aligners fit well and are working. BOS says orthodontic appointments are usually needed every four to ten weeks and advises against starting treatment if you know you will not be able to keep them.

If you live outside Türkiye, this is the key planning question. Before starting treatment away from home, agree:

  • how often you would need to come back, and where check-ups would take place
  • how a refinement would be handled if your teeth do not follow the plan
  • what would happen if an aligner were lost or broken, or an attachment came off, between visits
  • how treatment would continue if your plans or place of residence changed

Our page on planning your visit gives a general guide to how many trips different treatments need.

Does treatment end with the last aligner?

The last aligner marks the end of active treatment, not of the whole process. According to BOS, retainers are required after any aligner treatment so that the teeth keep their corrected positions, and it recommends continuing retention for the long term. The AAO adds that your orthodontist will tell you how long and how often to wear them. Plan for both the active phase and the retention phase that follows.

How is this planned at Rönesans?

Orthodontics is one of our clinic’s departments, and clear aligner treatment is carried out at our clinic in Serdivan, Sakarya. Whether aligners suit you is decided at an examination of your teeth, jaws and bite; if they do not, other orthodontic options are discussed. The impressions needed for planning can be taken with an intraoral scanner, without impression paste, and where your dentist decides it is necessary, 3D imaging can be carried out with the cone-beam CT (CBCT) scanner at our clinic.

If treatment is needed, you receive a written treatment and cost plan with unit and total costs, and you know from the start which dentist will look after you. The cost is confirmed after the examination, based on your treatment plan. We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 22:00 and on Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00, Türkiye time.

Whether aligner treatment is practical for you while you live outside Türkiye depends on how check-ups, refinements and lost aligners can be handled, so ask us about this before you decide. You can send photos on WhatsApp for a preliminary assessment or write to us through our contact page; during opening hours we reply to messages in English and German within 15 minutes. The final plan is made only after an in-person examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can clear aligner treatment be finished in six months?

In some mild cases it may be. Cleveland Clinic says a few slightly crooked teeth may need aligners for up to nine months. The British Orthodontic Society notes that simple straightening can sometimes be done in six months, but that such short treatment usually produces limited changes. If the bite also needs correcting, treatment takes longer; your estimate is given after the examination.

Why do some people change aligners every week and others every two weeks?

Each aligner moves the teeth a small step, and some movements need more time. In a randomised trial published in 2021 (Al-Nadawi and colleagues), the first series of aligners took about five months when aligners were changed every seven days and about nine months when they were changed every fourteen days; the fourteen-day schedule was more accurate for some back-tooth movements. Your dentist sets the interval.

What is a refinement, and will I need one?

A refinement is an additional series of aligners made when the teeth have not reached their planned positions. Not everyone needs one, but it is common: in a 2025 survey of 188 orthodontists (Ladewig and colleagues), at least one refinement was requested in about 70% of cases, and the authors found this was not linked to inexperience. The new aligners add time to treatment.

Can I have aligner treatment if I live outside Türkiye?

Aligner treatment usually lasts months and needs regular check-ups. The American Association of Orthodontists says visits to pick up new aligners are typically every six to ten weeks, and the British Orthodontic Society advises against starting treatment if you know you cannot keep appointments. Before deciding, agree how check-ups, refinements and lost aligners would be handled. You can send photos on WhatsApp for a preliminary assessment.

Do I need retainers after the last aligner?

Yes. The British Orthodontic Society says retainers are required after any aligner treatment so that the teeth keep their corrected positions, and it recommends continuing retention for the long term. The times given in this article cover active treatment only; how long and how often you wear retainers is decided by your dentist.
